In May’s work the meditative path manifests itself clearly. She has a suspicion of active elementary forces in the medium and tries to capture the unconscious memory of the medium in her experiences.
You could rather call her forming elementary and the creating itself is her master.
May tries to channel her urge to create by letting the essential speak for itself in matter. Every action is important with whatever material is used: a pencil, a paintbrush, a drill….
The uncontrollable, the detour, the unfinished, seeming coincidences are used consciously or unconsciously.
Not all work has grown from the gut or unconsciously; sometimes her works originate from a deliberate plan. Here the logical or more mathematical aspect comes to the fore, hand in hand with an increased sensitivity and attention to the material. An apparent contradiction: from a well-considered sober composition she gives the materials used a maximum platform for communication.
In het werk van May is duidelijk het meditatieve aanwezig. Ze heeft een vermoeden van werkzame elementaire krachten in het materiaal en probeert het onbewust geheugen van de materie te vangen in zie belevenissen.
Haar vormgeven zou je eerder elementair kunnen noemen en het scheppen zelf is haar leermeester.
May probeert haar drang tot creatie te kanaliseren door het essentiële in de materie zelf te laten spreken. Iedere handeling is belangrijk met welk materiaal ook: het potlood, de verfkwast, de boormachine….
De niet controle, de omweg, het onaffe, schijnbare toevalligheden worden bewust of onbewust ingezet.
Niet alle werk is zo vanuit de buik of onbewust gegroeid, soms zijn haar werken ontstaan vanuit een weloverwogen plan. Hier treedt dan het logische of meer het wiskundige op de voorgrond, hand in hand gaande met een verhoogde gevoeligheid en aandacht voor de stof. Een schijnbare contradictie: vanuit een weloverwogen sobere compositie geeft ze de gebruikte materialen een maximaal platform voor communicatie.
